Is Lewis and Tuivasa the best fight to make right now at Heavyweight? I sure think so!

Heavyweight has always been a weird division as far as the UFC has been concerned. In some instances, talent has shown to be a key factor when differentiating yourself amongst your peers. In other instances, however, all that most need is huge punching power. Enter Tuivasa and Lewis.

Tai Tuivasa knocks out Augusto Sakai in the second round. UFC 269.

Tuivasa is on his best streak, at the top of his career. Not only has he won 4 out of his last five, but he has finished every single one of these opponents. In doing so, he’s also managed to mount one of the biggest comebacks of his career, having turned the tracks from a three-fight losing skid. There seems to be a new air to the Australian-born contender. Though maintaining his brawler style, he’s more composed, being able to pick his shots way better.

After his loss to Sergey Spivak, many seemed to lose hope with the 28-year-old fighter.

Spivak and Tuivasa’s weigh-in at UFC 249. Spivak would win via technical submission.

However, this seemed to give new-found vigor to Tuivasa, which many fans have reveled in.

Then… there’s Lewis.

Derrick Lewis has always been a bit of a boogeyman—yes, I know that’s humorous to hear—when it comes to the heavyweight division. While not the most technical guy, his amazing punching power and ability to take damage has led to him defeating much more technical, and skilled opponents. Sure, many can consider him inconsistent, losing to the likes of Ciryl Gane, and Dos Santos, but outside of former champions, there are few in the division who can seem to stand across the octagon from him.

Derrick Lewis knocks out Chris Daukaus in the first round. December 18th, 2021.

His power is just such an equalizer, with many fans believing his power to be on par, or even greater than current heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou’s. This makes it so hard to build contention for Ngannou.

Which is why this fight makes the most sense.

Now, hear me out. Lewis is considered a gatekeeper amongst the heavyweights, with many having to fight him in order to gain their shot. Tuivasa is one of the few heavyweights with a hot streak to argue the case for a title shot. Both of their styles revolve around knockout power. Both are inches away from a title shot. And with Stipe seemingly inactive—though this is nothing new—this would be the perfect time to build the next number one contender.

Even if this isn’t an interim title fight, perse, the clash of styles still brings an excitement that many fans can get behind.

Though this is just my opinion, I would love to know what you guys think. Post down below in the comments.
