After months of disappointment from both competitors, we finally found out where Kevin Lee fits into all of this.

To say that Kevin Lee’s recent outings have been less than successful would be to undersell just how far the former interim challenger has fallen. After a disappointing loss to Ferguson, where Lee cited a staph infection as the cause of his troubles against the former interim champion, Lee seemed to ride a slippery slope that led to the termination of his contract with the UFC promotion.

“The Motown Phenom” would end up 1-5 in his last six bouts, his only win being a KO finish over Gregor “The Gift” Gillespie.

Kevin Lee finishes Gregor Gillespie with a headkick in the first round. This would be his last finish and win before his termination.

After his fight with Gillespie, however, things seemed to take a turn for the worse. Lee would look decent against Oliviera in the first round. However, similar cardio issues that have plagued his career would soon resurface, leading to a submission loss against the current undisputed champion at lightweight.

Kevin tried to revitalize his career by fighting closer to his natural weight but fell short against the competition. Where in the fight with Oliviera, it seemed even until the first round, Kevin Lee would take a beating throughout the fight against the prospect. Not even his wrestling seemed to be a turning factor as Rodriguez would continuously land his shots and punish Kevin Lee at range.

Daniel Rodriguez punishes Kevin Lee with his striking. D-Rod would go on to win the fight by unanimous decision.

A failed drug test, in which Kevin Lee tested positive for Adderall seemed to be the last straw for the UFC employers. On December 1st, Lee’s manager would announce that the 29-year-old would join the free agency pool.

All seemed lost for the young competitor. However, rumors surfaced that Kevin Lee would be joining Eagle FC. For most, this seemed like a weird move, seeing Lee’s former status, and the fact that the promotion was still in its first year of running.

What definitely took people by shock was learning of his opponent. Diego Sanchez. Diego is a 39-year-old veteran in the sport, known for his stint in the UFC. After a string of losses, Sanchez would join the free agency pool.

The fight is definitely one of the strangest matchups I’ve seen, at least in recent years, but this definitely begs the question:

Will Eagle FC prove to be a good fit for Lee? Will this new home help patch some of Lee’s holes? Or will this turn out to be false hope for the young competitor?
